Indications

This test is used to investigate gestational diabetes, diabetes mellitus, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, and reactive hypoglycaemia.

Comments/Precautions

Please refer to local trust guidelines for DFT protocols Glucose Tolerance Tests (by appointment only). This may be arranged through the phlebotomy department after screening with fasting glucose estimations. Samples: a fasting sample and a sample collected two hours after administering an oral 75g glucose load. Where the patient is pregnant a third (1 hour) sample should be taken and a pregnancy GTT requested. To make an appointment @NNUH, please telephone 01603 286921. Normal opening times (Monday to Friday only) 08:30 - 16:55. NB - if there are more than 6 patients waiting for a blood test at 16:45 the door will be closed. NB- Due to staff training the phlebotomy East and West OPD clinic will open at 9.05 am on the last Wednesday of every month. Please ensure all timings are clearly labelled on every sample.

Sample type

Glucose samples must be taken into the Fluoride Oxalate tube and 1ml (min) required (Grey top). Fluoride x 3
