Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn (QEH)

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust is a district general hospital located on a single site, serving a population of approximately 375,000. The catchment area primarily covers West and North Norfolk, with additional coverage extending into parts of North Cambridgeshire and South Lincolnshire.

The hospital provides a comprehensive range of services across approximately 500 inpatient beds, distributed over 22 core wards. These include critical care, intensive care, and high-dependency services, alongside a full complement of acute clinical specialties, including general surgery, medicine, maternity, paediatrics, and neonatal care.

The Pathology Department supports a wide range of clinical services and receives specimens from acute hospital specialties, the Renal Dialysis Unit, and local General Practitioners. Many of the referring GP services also undertake minor surgical procedures and endoscopy, contributing to the breadth and complexity of the diagnostic workload.

As a partner organisation within the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA), the Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn works collaboratively with Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This networked approach enables the standardisation and harmonisation of pathology services across the region, supports service resilience, and facilitates the sharing of expertise, resources, and best practice.

Within this framework, the Blood Sciences service at Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn forms a key component of the EPA network. The department provides a comprehensive analytical service, including Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, and Blood Transfusion, ensuring timely and accurate diagnostic support for both urgent and routine care pathways.

The Blood Sciences laboratory operates a 24-hour service, supporting acute and emergency activity across the Trust. It is closely integrated with the wider EPA network, enabling the optimisation of testing pathways, consistent reporting standards, and collaborative service development. The department also works in alignment with agreed EPA standard operating procedures and participates in network-wide quality improvement initiatives.

All laboratory services are delivered in accordance with ISO 15189 standards, with a strong emphasis on quality, patient safety, and continuous improvement. The department maintains robust governance structures, participates in external quality assurance schemes, and ensures compliance with UKAS accreditation requirements.
